THE ORCHARD RIDGE CAMPUS

OAKLAND COMMUNITY COLLEGE, FARMINGTON HILLS, MI

The original design concept for this community college directed the library and classrooms to be built under a major rooftop garden. Decades later, after waterproofing failure and a need to upgrade the interior spaces, complete reconstruction was required for the rooftop spaces. The new concept features generous gathering spaces and circulation paths made of cast-in-place concrete configured with free flowing edges and integrated with sensuous landforms. Major canopy trees, shrubs and lawn provide a softening quality that help make the spaces attractive for human interaction.
